This isn't any comparison between Music Directors. I like all the Music Directors and appreciate their great efforts in giving us such wonderful songs that have become an important part of our life!
Having said that, I can't resist saying that I have that extra little liking for Satyam for reasons not known to me. May be like Love at First Sight, I would have been fascinated by few of his melodies and relatively westernized beats at my young age. Todate I love to hear most of his songs except for some pathetic music given by him at the end of his career which is an inevitable phenomenon for every Music Director however great he is.
All of you here might be having an extra liking for some music director of 70's and 80's. I invite you to share your liking and compile the best of your favourite music director's songs in that era so that a page can be dedicated in the website. You can help with the songs that are not available on the website.
Thanks to Srini for already compiling a list of songs of my favourite music director! |

I have three music directors whom I like the most. Each of them is great in their own right.
1. Ramesh Naidu - When you listen to his songs what is striking is the simplicity in orchestration and melody in his songs. His combo with Jandhyala, Dasari and Vijaya nirmala gave birth to innumerable melodies.
"Masaka Masaka cheekatilo", though a cabaret song in the raunchy voice of L R Eswari is so melodious.
2. Rajan-Nagendra - This duo, I feel, were one of the first to introduce western type orchestration into telugu music. One amazing thing in their music, there will be a hint of similarity in orchestration of their songs yet they are so listenable. Navata Krishnam Raju and Jandhyala patronized their music to some extent
3. Keeravani - In the modern lot, I like him a lot. His music is characterized by clarity, importance to the lyric and orchestral creativity. I think he is one contemporary MD who is patronized by both commercialists (K Raghavendra Rao) and classical oriented (K Vishwanath and Bapu). Of late, with onslaught of new singers and himself, his songs are slightly displeasing but his songs are pleasant to hear.

Without a second doubt, I would say mAma, KV Mahadevan's name as my most admirable Telugu Music Director. Next to him, it is Sathyam, Rajan-Nagendra, Ramesh Naidu, MS Viswanadhan, GK Venkatesh and Chakravarhi in that order.
mAma was consistently delivering melodious songs for almost three decades. Albeit he had a stiff competition from S. Rajeswara Rao, Sathyam and Chakravarthi in the 60's , 70's and 80's respectively, he weathered all that and stood as the number one melodious music director in the Telugu film history (this is just my opinion )
Every one knows about mAma and I don't need to tell about him any thing new. But after I started working on this site, I was more enthralled by Sathyam's songs than any one else (including mAma). I knew that Sathyam gave some of the best songs to Krishna through out the 70's and they remain Krishna's best romantic songs till date..
The more I started learning about Sathyam's melodies, the more I fell in love with his tunes in the last six months. All the time, I was thinking they were done by mAma (like songs from nEnU nA dESam, nEnU manishinE, magAdu etc).
I feel that KV Maahdevan and Ramesh Naidu got enough recognition for their work in the history of Telugu melodies, but somehow people tend to forget Sathyam's work. Look at all the current online Telugu music sites- they have not covered even 10% of Sathyam's hit songs that we have on our site. This is what tempted me to devote a separate section to Sathyam on the site, but not to KV Mahadevan or Ramesh Naidu. I just want people to take a note that Sathyam was one of the kings of Telugu melodies. Look at his rain songs or bhakti songs or romanatic songs.. he had a unique style with simple archestra and in particular with the sweetest melodious tunes!!!
As Surya mentioned, he did some B & C grade movies in the 80's (like PNR pictures, rAkAsi lOya etc) and by that time, people were in the trance of Chakravarthi's mass tunes and Sathyam was totally ignored in the 80's. The last hit movie with hit songs I can recall is talambrAlu (86) during my Intermediate days. Though ankuSam was his last movie, it did not have any songs, except a song or two.

You are still mentioning Magadu , MD as Satyam. It is KV Mahadevan. I am 100% sure about it.
According to SPB, KVM and Ramesh Naidu always composed music only after the lyrics were written. This helped lyricists to use exactly the words they wanted to express without any influence of music composition.
Coming to recognition in online websites, telugubiz.net(chakri.com) has 'Vedam la goshinche Godavari...' from Andhra Kesari and 'Toli sandhya velalo...' from Sitaramulu mentioning MD as Ramesh Naidu for both the films. I mailed them to correct it as Satyam but they haven't bothered. I had to struggle to convince about the MD of Andhra Kesari in one of the DBs, as the other participants quoted telugubiz.net link in support of their argument! This is the one of the reasons, I emphasize on our music site to have correct information so that artists get due recognition.
MS Reddi, a good lyricist and producer, always had Satyam as MD for his films except one or two. Unfortunately none of his films did well at box-office till Ankusam, but all films had very good songs. |

When it comes to music directors of old generation, for me it is very hard to choose among the string of stalwarts like, Saluri, Pendyala, Ghantasala, T.V.Raju, KVM etal. Later generation, I do not hesitate to choose Rajan - Nagendra followed by Ilayaraja. Ultimately, my vote goes to any melody in general irrespective of the MD. |

i guess it is paradEsi some time in 1957, right?
He went to bombay in the early 60's and returned to telugu films only in 1970 with amma mATa movie, I guess.
I think I have written this for one of Ramesh Naidu's songs hosted in the "Songs of the Week" section on the site... pl. correct me if I am wrong.

1957 is correct, but movie I understand is 'dAMpatyaM' starring G.Varalakshmi,Gummadi,Relangi etc.
'China desam vellanu..aina hrudayam manadenu...' sung by Ghantasala is one of the songs in that film mentioned in Ghantasala Collection.
'ParadEsi' was released much before in 1953 starring ANR,Anjali. |

dear friends
When we talk of Ramesh Naidu we should talk about his 1959 film Manorama. This film has one beautiful lullaby CHANDAMAMA RAVE JABILLI RAVE sung by susheela.
But manorama means Talat mehmood and Talat mehmood for telugu people means Manorama. Ever listened to the song Andala Seema sudha nilayam- Talat at his best, Ramesh Naidu at his best. Talat has sung three songs in this film but only two are available one solo is missing I hope some one will find it some time.
If I am to select Three music directors of Seventies I would select the following three leaving the stalwarts like MSV, MAMA, CHAKRAVARTHI,PENDYALA(I think pendyala composed only 10 films or so in seventies),T CHALAPATHI RAO,S HANUMANTHARAO,ILAYARAJA,S RAJESHWARA RAO
SO MY TOP THREE MUSIC DIRECTORS OF 70s are
1. SP KODANDAPANI (FOR GIVING BALU EXCELLENT MELODIES IN MAHABALUDU, GOODUPUTANI AND MANY MORE)
2. SATHYAM (My maternal uncles used to call him affectionately as "mana sathigaadu")
3. I had to choose one between Ramesh Naidu and our own SP balu and I prefer SP balu because of his melodies and soothing compositions
Machhuki
Kalakalam idhe paadani
Ee paadam from mayuri
Tellarindi legandoi from Kallu(This is my all time favourite because My fav singer composed it and my fav lyricist Sung it. This song is the first song sung by Sirivennala seetharamasastry)
Ennallamma Ennellamma from Jaithra yathra of nagarjuna
Toorupu velle railu
Life is shabby without you baby (written composed and sung by balu) from the film padamati sandhyaragamSP always used to tell that he had failed as a MD which I dont accept because his compositions were very good but he took to music direction in a time when violence for forte in the films.

Hi Nanda,
I too accept that Balu never failed as a music composer. I guess you forgot his first movie, kanyA kumAri (Narasimha Raju section) that has two best songs.
Though mAma used to be my first choice earlier, after I started this site and started collecting the 70's/80's songs (on my own and from Surya's collection) I realized that there is some thing in Sathyam's haunting melodies.. esplly in Krishna's movies.
I am still not able to decide my first choice between mAma and Sathyam.
My next two preferences are Rajan-Nagendra and Ramesh Naidu ( again very difficult to say who is third and who is fourth in my preferences).
As Surya once mentioned that we can not forget JV Raghavulu, who has a combination of Sathyam and Chakravarthi streaks in his melodies.

Hi Nanda,
Thellarindi Legandoi from Kallu is my all time favorite too. But I am sure that it is sung by Balu only, Not Sirivennela garu.
I saw one of his interviews and he said that it was Balu who sang that song making us belive that Sirivennela sang it. He praised Balu on that interview a lot! |

Dear amarjun
IT IS 100% SIRIVENNELA'S VOICE. I think you are confused with the song of Gayam Nigga deesi adugu which was picturised on Seetharamasastry and sung by Baalu. But Kallu song is sungby sirivennala himself.

Can you pl. get the music director of "chilaka jOsyam" checked? I think it is Rajan-Nagendra and PSusheela.org says it is KVM.
Thanks,

All the MDs mentioned here are, of course, undoubtedly excellent masters in their own right. Each of them turned out quite a large number of mellimellos. However, if it comes to choosing from songs, I wonder if any can beat these songs for their melody and substance : Rajen Nagendra's songs from Intinti ramayanam, veena venuvaina and mallelu poose and cheekati velugula kougitalo from cheekati velugulu (Chakravarthi) as songs expressing conjugal love (listen to the lyrics again!!) and almost serenade-like sarikotha cheera from Pelli pustakam (dear mama's) and sogasu chooda tharama from Mr. Pellam (Keeravani). How I wish R-N and Chakravarthi had the same technology we use nowadays to record these wonderful songs!! _________________ Vasu |

You are 100% correct of the song Thellarindi legendo in the film
Kallu sung by our favourite lyricist Sirivennela. But the song in Gayam
Niggadeesi adugu ee sigguleni jananni also sung by Sirivennela
only and Iam also 100% correct.[/b] _________________ KAYVEE |

ilayaraja is my most liked music director. his songs are all very melodious and very catchy. his orchestration is simply mind-blowing, espacially the violin patterns. the speciality of Ilayaraja is that in most of his songs, there is no tabla, or dhol, instead there is drums. most music directors use tabla as base percussion, but Raaja uses other western instruments, but keeping the song Indian only. he is the only music director who can base a song on a western beat and compose the tune in a classican carnatic raaga. his songs show two extremes(indian classical and western classical). the flute he uses in his songs is simply wonderful. |

Raktabhandham by NTR was a remake of Pasamalar in Tamil about a year before this. The music was By great duo Viswanathan and Ramamoorthy. But in the Telugu version it was Ghantasala. But why did he keep the original tracks from VR rather than his music? Ghantasala was also a great MD. Any one knows why? |
