Our Chimata Srini has been contemplating on the publication of a comprehensive book on the biographies of Telugu film music directors. In this context, the name that has first come to my mind is Raja. It must be his pseudonym—I do not know his real name. The in-depth music reviews of film songs by Raja used to appear in Cene Herald, edited by director Sridhar. Cene Herald was a very popular magazine in late 1970s and mid 1980s. Raja would write on the tunes of Mahadevan, Sathyam and Chakravarthi mentioning the names of ragas that are used in each song. He wrote detailed reviews on Saluri, Pendyala, Mahadevan, and Ghantasala. If a song is inspired by a Hindi song, he would identify the original tune. Raja is quite caring about the sensibilities of all composers. He predicted unforeseen success to Chakravarthi. I believe Raja is presently contributing to Haasam, a magazine with a focus on music and humour. In later years, with Paadutha Theeyaga on EeTV, S.P.Balasubrahmanyam took the initiative to educate our Telugu folks on the beauties of our film music. I hope that Pulagam, the author chosen by Chimata Srini has the traits of Raja. Is Raja and Pulagam one and same by any chance?

SuryaPraksah garu,

Haasam Raja and Pulagam are different.

As you said, Raja used to review music in Haasam magazine which ran for 3 yrs but had to close because of lack of patronage. He was one of the key people behind Haasam. He had a sensible taste and approach to music critique.

Dear Sunson:

I am unhappy to know that Haasam, a magazine with a purpose, was closed due to lack of patronage. It is difficult to sustain magazines that could give pleasure only to a limited number of readers. I hope lack of patronage is not going to be a problem for online discussion forums like ChimataMusic. It is good. Is it possible, dear Sunson, to invite Raja to join us on ChimataMusic discussion forum? I am quite confident that Pulagam would compose an authentic book on the biographies of our music directors as Chimata Srini has taken great pains in collecting all the material for this task of writing.

hi

One more reason for the death of haasam was the rift between the people who were behind the magazine.

Reg inviting people to our DB, I dont think it is possible, had it been so easy I wish I could have got the gr8 VAK himself.

Raja now writes a small type of quiz in Saakshi Newspaper. Incidentally his was the first name in the mind of Srini when he thought of a compendium.

Dear Nanda Kishore:

I understand the problem. In fact, I have been dreaming of having great music reviewers like V.A.K. Ranga Rao and Raja in our discussions. I am still optimistic.

Let me congratulate you for your write-up on K.V.Mahadevan. Composers of the breed of Mahadevan are very rare in our film music. Every word of a lyric received due credit in his compositions. Your article is very informative and has thrown several new insights on the life and working style of the great composer.

I am looking for someone to enlighten us on Carnatic and Hindustani ragas employed by our great composers in some of their masterpieces. It is for this sort of critical analysis based on ragas, we need V.A.K. Ranga Rao and Raja.

suryaprakash garu,

I too thought about this concept of classical ragas in film songs.

But the thing is many of us doesnt know the intricacies of swaras/prasthanas in a raga(Sorry for generalising,), unless we are trained in classical music we cant understand the creative talent of the MDs.

For eg. I my self knew about the ragas of film songs based on few film tunes, eg. Manase kovelaga- kalyani, Aakasa desana- sivaranjani(fav of Dasari- he uses it almost in every film of his), but If we go deep into it,

Like the Songs Baharon Phool barasao, Dil ke jharoke mein and Mere naina all belong to sivaranjani- I fall flat on what is that spl thing in these songs which make them different even though they are of the same raga.

And even if someone explains about the swaras, I cant understand because of no training(I presume this is the bottlenect for many of us).

But this is not the case with lyrics we can enjoy- elaborate the essence etc etc...

for eg. In the song Mathu vadalara nidura mathu vadalara -- in the charanam - Andhakaramalaminapudu veluturukai choodali anna padamlo if we take the literal meaning it is understandable, we can go on adding the extended meanings- inferences-- etc etc

anduke peddalu annaru

Sangeeta sahithyam saraswathi sthanadvayam
Ekam aapatha madhuram ekam alochanaamrutam

aapatha madhuram vinnantha sepe kaani sahityam alochanamrutham alochinchina koladi amrutham

Dear Nanda Kishore:

We see reviews of abstract paintings in prominent magazines to help us to understand the nuances of this art form. Abstract art is Greek and Latin to most of us without these reviews. It may be equally true that, even after reading these reviews, some paintings remain puzzling. I used to enjoy reading the music reviews of the great V.A.K.Ranga Rao in The Hindu and Andhra Prabha with a lot of interest.

Like all the participants on the discussion board, I have been in love with film songs right from my early childhood. I have a large circle of music loving friends in my college days. Who wouldn’t love music, for that matter? Two of our friends have a good exposure to Carnatic and Hindustani music. They could identify several ragas with ease. Kalyani, Mohana, Bhairavi, Sivaranjani….. It seems Sivaranjani happens to be one of the favorite ragas of Sankar-Jaikishan duo. If only we know a few basics of our classical music…?? I agree that raga, sruthi, laya, gamakas… are all meant for the specialist.

It is something like this. We all studied the basics of the Telugu prosody in our school days. Only a few of us could write poems. We agree that the Telugu that we leant in our high school helps us to appreciate poetry better.

Every raga has its own texture in terms of tune, season, context, emotion, and other features. Knowledge of the features of the raga of a song would surely enhance our enjoyment. Some music directors do not confine ragas to their chosen emotions. I believe that this awareness adds to our pleasure of listening to music.

I had stumbled upon e-mail id of Raja gaaru (raja.musicologist@gmail.com) from his regular article "Aa paata madhuram" in Koumudi.net.

May be an invitation from Srini can make him interested in our DB.

Thanks Sunson and Prof Surya gArlu..

I am happy to tell you that Raja gAru calls me once in a while from India to correct some typos (that he some times comes across) in our site in particular on the lyricist and music directors names. Recently he called me up and corrected the Ghantasala (not Master Venu) should be the music director of abhimAnam movie.

I doubt if he can spend time at computer and share his thoughts with us in this DB.

Initially Koumudi editor (KiranPrabha gAru) recommended Raja's name as a potential writer for our Music Directors' Bio-graphy book. But he was not able to give me a firm commitment on the completetion date and hence I had to go with Pulagam.

More later..
